WI, MO on high alert as public notice bills churn through state legislatures

April 12, 2017

More than 120 public notice bills have been introduced in at least 37 different states through the first week of March, raising varying levels of concern among newspaper publishers and state press associations around the country. The only states where the danger signs are flashing red, however, appear to be Wisconsin and Missouri.

 

2016 NNA convention proved beneficial for members and vendors

As a direct result of the 2016 National Newspaper Association 130th annual convention and trade show, I was able to introduce myself to several newspaper owners. A faint minority of voice votes opposed to the U.S. Postal Service Reform Act of 2017 failed to stall the bill March 16, as members of the National Newspaper Association monitored the actions of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee from within the hearing room.

The U.S. Postal Service recently invited NNA to create a training video to assist with training of postal mail processing staff. The video was designed to fit in with other materials on best ways to efficiently move the mail. Emphasizing that newspapers should not linger in processing plants but should be quickly moved to their destination was the goal of the video. NNA members are invited to share it with their postmasters and others involved in moving the mail.
