That's Entertainment: Mardi Gras occurs just once a year, but the spirit of the grand carnival is captured nightly in Mobile Bay’s thriving entertainment district. After dining in one of the restaurants, come experience a night out on the town “Mobile Bay style.” Mobile Bay’s nightlife offers a unique glimpse into the heart and soul of our lively southern city. This year, it will be the site of the National Newspaper Association’s annual convention.
Are you on board yet to join us in Mobile, AL, Sept. 24-27, 2009? In these tough economic times can you afford to miss an opportunity to learn how to increase revenue, cut expenses and work more efficiency at your newspaper? We promise you will go away with enough new ideas to more than pay for your registration fee. The trade show is sure to also offer new and exciting ideas as well as special offers on products and services.
When planning your trip be sure to arrive in time to take advantage of one of the three pre-convention educational workshops your convention committee has planned. Workshops are scheduled from 1-5 p.m. on Thursday. (An additional fee for these workshops is required.) The first workshop is an abbreviated version of The American Press Institute’s NewspaperNEXT series, which was first offered this spring. Maximizing Revenue Across all Channels is an in-depth seminar for senior revenue executives that focuses on how the new local media sales department can be organized, staffed, trained, compensated and supported. Join trainer Elaine Clisham, API director of tailored programs, as she explains about critical new sources of revenue, online and offline and other revenue channels beyond advertising.
Dick Ward, CentraMart, will be your trainer for A Web2Web Strategic Workshop. He will walk you through the process of assessment and strategic planning. Learn how to create a customized Web2Web business strategy and what decisions need to be made before you start the process, including what application to use, which employees to send and what prices to charge.
The third workshop, Tap Into a New Revenue Source, will be led by Dawn Kitchell, Missouri Press Association’s Newspaper in Education guru and Vicki Whiting of Freedom Communications. Community newspapers have a new opportunity to reach children, their teachers and parents. In today’s world an NIE program may offer the best way to put a newspaper into a student’s hands. This workshop will give you the tools to start an NIE program at your newspaper, while finding a rich new revenue stream. A quality educational program attracts mothers—the consumers who make up 80 percent of the spending decisions in the home.
If you don’t arrive in time to attend one of the workshops, the exhibit hall will have a soft opening from 2-4 p.m. Make sure to check it out after you pick up your registration packet with your conference badge. Take some time and browse the National Newspaper Association Foundation silent auction items and the contest boards.
That evening, the exhibit hall will open again for the opening reception (last year this event was held on Friday evening). Meet up with your colleagues and join us for light reception fare and a few cocktails. There will be some great prizes again, including the return of the NNA Cash Vault with valuable coupons and handfuls of the green stuff. It will be an evening of fun for all. You can enjoy dinner on your own at one of the many fine restaurants Mobile has to offer. You must stay until the end of the reception to win one of the great prizes.
In future issues of Pub Aux there will be more in-depth details on the convention program. Registration information will be available in your June Pub Aux and available online at www.nna.org. Make the investment to join us in Mobile and mark your calendar now. While you are at it, take advantage of some of the great airfares being offered by visiting NNA’s travel network www.ytbtravel.com/nna.
