NNA to visit VOA during GAC

WASHINGTON—A unique view of Voice of America, a broadcasting operation of the U.S. that reaches around the world in 44 languages, will be featured at the 50th Annual Government Affairs Conference. A behind-the-scenes tour and briefing by senior Voice of America executives will occur July 22. GAC is set for July 20-22 at the Westin Washington Hotel in Washington.

Attendees are invited to join in a social event on July 21 for a theater-in-the-round viewing of the classic musical “Oklahoma!” at Washington’s newly-renovated Arena Stage. “Oklahoma!” played to sold-out houses in the fall of 2010 and will be back just in time for GAC. Arena Director Molly Smith says the show “speaks of how good and robust America is, and who we are as a people.”

The 50th Annual GAC will focus on the 2012 presidential race and on the hot topics on Capitol Hill. The theme, “We Believe in Newspapers,” tracks with the new National Newspaper Association campaign to reinforce the viability and importance of community newspapers. A gala on the evening of July 22 will feature a nationally-recognized keynote speaker, to be announced soon. Events for “Next Generation Publishers” will include an off-site social event on July 21, for younger publishers and editors who want networking time on their own.

NNA Chief Executive Officer Tonda F. Rush said the 2011 GAC would celebrate NNA’s 125th year as well as the half-century mark for GAC.

“This event showcases the headliners in national politics, and gives community newspaper executives an opportunity to make their voice heard in Washington,” she said. “Program details typically take shape about 60 days before the event, but space is usually limited for the most popular features. Longtime GAC fans know that it’s important to plan ahead and get travel plans in place early. Registration information will be available on NNA’s website in April.”
